The trade table was where it all came apart. The Vikings shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. Too much went sideways, and the D is the honest tally.
Drake Maye is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Sturdivant.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get the arm they will build around. The biggest hole, addressed.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at pick No. 52. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Brenden Rice in the 94th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A need, and now a little less of one.
Tyler Guyton at the 157th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A quiet steal in slot 168: Mike Sainristil for less than the market said. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They will replay J. Michael Sturdivant at No. 179 for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
Dwight McGlothern at pick 241 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
