The real work happened on the phones. The Texans fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Cowing. A whole weekend of picks and offensive lineman is somehow still a want.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 32 they get a premier pass rusher at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
No drama and no debate, T'Vondre Sweat went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jacob Cowing at slot 123 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Value with a capital V on Kris Abrams-Draine in pick No. 126, a genuine coup. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They did well to land James Williams in the 134th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They took Frank Gore Jr. at par in the 163rd pick, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 187 with a little surplus value in Michael Barrett. The roster fit checks out.
A tidy little value on Mark Perry in No. 239, a step better than break-even. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
A slide stopped in pick No. 247, with Eric Gentry worth more than the price. It fills a real need, too.
