You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Vikings did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
Whatever J.J. McCarthy becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The McCarthy pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get the arm they will build around, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In pick 18 they get a problem off the edge. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Michael Hall Jr. at No. 90. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They took Cam Hart at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Javion Cohen at slot 157 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reach on Ty'Ron Hopper in the 167th overall pick; the board had better options right there. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A reach for Tanor Bortolini in pick No. 177; a little patience would have been rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid up for Josh Proctor at the 230th pick when waiting would have done the job. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jordan Whittington at the Round 7 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
