The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Raiders reached some 175 spots for Jasheen Davis, and value like that does not grow back. A D that will need time and luck to look better.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. That Bond pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Tetairoa McMillan in pick No. 12, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid up for Trey Amos at pick 37 when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Will Howard. The roster fit checks out.
TreVeyon Henderson in No. 64 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A need, and now a little less of one.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Kyle McCord this early at Round 3, Pick 4. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Steal is underselling it; Savion Williams at the 111th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Circle this one: Isaiah Bond at the 121st overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Taking Anthony Belton in the Round 4 slot is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board fumbled Cam Skattebo all the way to No. 140, and they scooped it up. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They barely believed it either: Cobee Bryant still on the board at the 146th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A cornerback of that caliber at pick No. 157 is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They robbed the room for Mello Dotson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jasheen Davis at Round 6, Pick 4 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
You do not let a cornerback like Quincy Riley reach slot 213 and blink. They did not. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at pick No. 222 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jaylen Reed in the 230th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Jay Higgins in Round 7, Pick 19 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor itch, scratched.
Ricky White III at pick 244 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A wild overpay on De'Corian Clark in the 257th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
