There is reaching, and then there is Tykee Smith at the 105th overall pick. The Eagles jumped the board by 42 and dared it to prove them wrong. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. Barrett at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 22nd pick they get a press-man option on the boundary. The biggest hole, addressed.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Payton Wilson in pick 50. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
No drama and no debate, Xavier Worthy went about where he belonged in pick No. 53. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reach on Cooper Beebe in slot 59; the board had better options right there. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They went early on Isaac Guerendo in the 97th overall pick, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tykee Smith in No. 105, miles early. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Mason McCormick at the Round 5 slot is the proof. It fills a real need, too.
Delmar Glaze in the 171st overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Joe Milton III in slot 189 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Michael Barrett at No. 240 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
