You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cardinals did exactly that with Hayden Hatten in the 234th overall pick. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A-.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. McGlothern falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
The Sainristil pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback, edge rusher and other spots still on the board.
In the end it comes back to Cooper DeJean, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 21st overall pick they get a potential shutdown corner. More want than need.
Nothing to complain about; Emeka Egbuka went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Kingsley Suamataia in Round 3, Pick 2 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the 71st pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Michael Hall Jr.. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Malachi Corley at pick 104 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Mike Sainristil adds a cornerback and leaves quarterback, edge rusher and other spots untouched.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Josh Proctor at the 188th overall pick is the proof. A minor itch, scratched.
Joshua Gray in the 205th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They jumped the gun on Cody Schrader, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They reached a country mile for Jeremiah Walker at Round 7, Pick 7, and the board is aghast. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Hayden Hatten at No. 234 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Circle this one: Dwight McGlothern at pick No. 248 is a fall that decides a draft. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
