The board owed the Eagles one, and it paid up: DJ James, the No. 53 name on the board, sitting there at the Round 4 slot like a gift left on the doorstep. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B+.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. It is not that Trotter Jr. is a bad player; it is that the Eagles had louder needs to answer first.
For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain. Reaching for Jones left real value on the table behind him.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a problem off the edge at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
By-the-book stuff, Edgerrin Cooper at slot 50 squarely in line with his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Ja'Tavion Sanders in the 53rd overall pick. The roster fit checks out.
A want over a need in pick 62: Jeremiah Trotter Jr. adds a linebacker while wide receiver, interior defensive lineman and other spots keeps waiting.
DJ James at the 120th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Kitan Oladapo at pick No. 161 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. It fills a real need, too.
Dwight McGlothern in Round 5, Pick 29 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They read the board right and Isaiah Davis was the payoff at No. 171. A need, and now a little less of one.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Trente Jones well ahead of where he belonged. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Caedan Wallace in the 210th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Value with a capital V on Drake Nugent in pick 228, a genuine coup. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
