The real work happened on the phones. The Texans fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
Wright has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not. The roster is better shaped than it was, with running back chief among the fixes.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 27 they get a go-to option on the outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
T'Vondre Sweat in No. 40 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They liked Edgerrin Cooper enough to skip the value, taking him in the 50th pick. It fills a real need, too.
Cooper Beebe at Round 3, Pick 5 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They reached into another round for James Williams, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jaylen Wright. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They jumped the gun on Ben Sinnott, taking him earlier than his grade liked. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jaylin Simpson at pick No. 131 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Maurice Smith in the 213th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
