Houston Texans

The Texans got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-.

The Texans clearly saw something nobody else did in J.C. Davis, taking him 81 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

Sanders falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.31 · Pick 31 · Emeka Egbuka · WR · rank 35
In pick No. 31 they get a home-run threat at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Jeremiah Trotter Jr. · LB · rank 64
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at slot 36 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Kiran Amegadjie · OT · rank 56
Kiran Amegadjie in the 58th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Ja'Tavion Sanders · TE · rank 58
Nice patience on Ja'Tavion Sanders, who had no business lasting to the 71st pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.31 · Pick 94 · Justin Eboigbe · DL-EDGE · rank 131
A big swing on Justin Eboigbe at the Round 3 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.23 · Pick 123 · James Williams · S · rank 136
James Williams at Round 4, Pick 23 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A minor itch, scratched.
R4.26 · Pick 126 · Cam Hart · CB · rank 139
A conviction pick on Cam Hart at pick 126 that the board grades a round light. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Jaylen Wright · RB · rank 163
Jaylen Wright at Round 5, Pick 1 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.15 · Pick 151 · Christian Jones · OT · rank 213
Christian Jones in the 151st pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R5.36 · Pick 172 · J.C. Davis · OL · rank 253
This one needs a full-page explanation: J.C. Davis in slot 172, miles early. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R6.2 · Pick 177 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 173
Nothing to complain about; Joe Milton III went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It fills a real need, too.
