You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Vikings did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
The Thomas pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Landing Sainristil that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
No drama and no debate, J.J. McCarthy went about where he belonged in No. 42. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Mike Sainristil in the 108th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Darius Robinson at pick No. 129. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jalyx Hunt in the 148th pick. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
LaDarius Henderson at the Round 5 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Braelon Allen at pick 168 is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Zion Tupuola-Fetui slid further than he should have, and the 179th overall pick is lovely value for the edge rusher. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They reached a country mile for Xavier Thomas at No. 230, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
