Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings answered their biggest question with McCarthy. Grade: B.

Future B

The Vikings spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.

Landing Brade that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.

McCarthy has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.11 · Pick 11 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 29
In pick 11 they get the face of the franchise, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R1.30 · Pick 30 · Kool-Aid McKinstry · CB · rank 23
In the 30th overall pick they get a potential shutdown corner. Need was not the driver here.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Jalen McMillan · WR · rank 99
They let Jalen McMillan come to them and pounced at the Round 4 slot. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.29 · Pick 129 · Trevor Keegan · OG · rank 144
Trevor Keegan at No. 129 is a conviction pick that outran the value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · Beau Brade · S · rank 134
Beau Brade in the 157th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.29 · Pick 165 · Nehemiah Pritchett · CB · rank 143
Nehemiah Pritchett at Round 5, Pick 29 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
R5.37 · Pick 173 · Marist Liufau · LB · rank 164
Marist Liufau slipping to pick No. 173 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R6.2 · Pick 177 · Layden Robinson · OG · rank 175
By-the-book stuff, Layden Robinson at slot 177 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.31 · Pick 206 · Logan Lee · DL · rank 210
Logan Lee in the Round 6 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.12 · Pick 232 · Frank Gore Jr. · RB · rank 227
Frank Gore Jr. in pick 232 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A need, and now a little less of one.
