Nobody had James Williams this high, and it is not close. The Texans reached 26 spots to get him at pick No. 104. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a load in the middle, even if it was a touch early. The biggest hole, addressed.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for T'Vondre Sweat. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A premium they did not need to pay, Cooper Beebe a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Roman Wilson at No. 76 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
James Williams in Round 4, Pick 4 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They reached a country mile for Jaylin Simpson at pick 127, and the board is aghast. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Jaylen Wright at slot 149 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A reach on Christian Jones in the 177th overall pick; the board had better options right there. It fills a real need, too.
They talked themselves into Joshua Cephus at No. 209, and the board did not agree. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
