This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Luke McCaffrey, the No. 149 name on the board, stolen at the 171st overall pick. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
The cost of the Jones reach is exactly the players who went right after him. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 22 they get a lockdown presence outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Edgerrin Cooper at pick 50 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Nothing to complain about; Kris Jenkins went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Tyler Davis in Round 4, Pick 20 is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid sticker price for Tykee Smith in the Round 5 slot, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Steal is underselling it; Luke McCaffrey at pick No. 171 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached into another round for Trente Jones, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
