Boards are made to be trusted, and the Eagles shredded theirs for Nathaniel Watson. He came off 40 spots early, and the room will hear about it. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. They banked enough surplus on Mims to cover a lot of smaller sins.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 22nd overall pick they get a lockdown presence outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In slot 30 they get a home-run threat at receiver, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the 50th pick is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No edge and no loss on Payton Wilson in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They took Christian Mahogany at par in pick No. 98, which is nothing to complain about. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid sticker price for James Williams in No. 120, and that is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
Dwight McGlothern is a better player than the Round 5 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They talked themselves into Nathaniel Watson at Round 5, Pick 36, and the board did not agree. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
JD Bertrand at pick No. 210 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
