Somebody in Round 2, Pick 18 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Eagles sat still while Amarius Mims, the No. 22 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
If Harrell pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver.
On the needs board they went 4 of 9, with cornerback the one that mattered most. They reloaded the coverage unit in bulk.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 22nd pick they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Taking Amarius Mims in slot 50 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A tidy little value on Jackson Powers-Johnson in pick No. 54, a step better than break-even. It fills a real need, too.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tykee Smith. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
James Williams in pick 137 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Curtis Jacobs at No. 163 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Circle this one: Jaylin Simpson at the Round 5 slot is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jaylen Harrell at the 178th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A premium they did not need to pay, Eric Gentry a notch or two before his time. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
