Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Jayson Jones at Round 7, Pick 23 is 43 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. The bottom line is a respectable B.

The phones were where this weekend was really won. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.

The Cooper pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback. On the needs board they went 8 of 9, with cornerback the one that mattered most.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.23 · Pick 23 · Kool-Aid McKinstry · CB · rank 19
In the 23rd overall pick they get a lockdown presence outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.22 · Pick 54 · Jeremiah Trotter Jr. · LB · rank 61
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the 54th pick is fair value, right on his grade. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R2.23 · Pick 55 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 75
Johnny Wilson at pick No. 55 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R2.31 · Pick 63 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 59
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Edgerrin Cooper while clear needs at quarterback sat open.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Audric Estime · RB · rank 97
A wild overpay on Audric Estime in the Round 3 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.19 · Pick 83 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 95
Zak Zinter in No. 83 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It fills a real need, too.
R4.5 · Pick 105 · James Williams · S · rank 130
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for James Williams. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.31 · Pick 131 · Javon Foster · OT · rank 126
Nothing to complain about; Javon Foster went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 146
A reach on Theo Johnson in slot 137; the board had better options right there. The roster fit checks out.
R5.27 · Pick 163 · Javon Baker · WR · rank 178
They paid a round early for Javon Baker in pick No. 163, more than the board wanted. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.36 · Pick 172 · Ethan Driskell · OT · rank 182
A reach for Ethan Driskell in the 172nd overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.3 · Pick 178 · Jaylen Harrell · DE-EDGE · rank 194
They went early on Jaylen Harrell in the Round 6 slot, and the value did not follow. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.23 · Pick 243 · Jayson Jones · DL · rank 286
Value said wait; Jayson Jones in Round 7, Pick 23 says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
