You can draft well and still miss the point. The Eagles did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to offensive lineman, which was the need that mattered most. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
That Williams pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They will need Wiggins to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Job largely done: cornerback settled and 6 of 9 of the wish list covered.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 28 they get a ballhawk on the outside, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jeremiah Trotter Jr.. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kris Jenkins in pick 60. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Adisa Isaac in the 97th pick is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
James Williams slipping to slot 137 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The roster fit checks out.
By-the-book stuff, Ainias Smith at the 156th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Ty'Ron Hopper at the Round 5 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Fabien Lovett in No. 178 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid sticker price for Frank Gore Jr. in the 249th pick, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
