Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Eagles were there to profit. Jaylin Simpson, the No. 147 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 178th overall pick.
They are betting Lloyd proves the room right and everyone else wrong. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
The back end got a real overhaul.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a sticky cover corner. The biggest hole, addressed.
A tidy bit of business in Round 2, Pick 18, where Tyler Guyton graded well above the range. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the 54th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor itch, scratched.
Value said wait; MarShawn Lloyd in slot 97 says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
Cole Bishop slid further than he should have, and pick No. 137 is lovely value for the safety. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Joe Milton III at the 163rd pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jaylan Ford. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
You do not let a cornerback like Jaylin Simpson reach No. 178 and blink. They did not. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jaylon Carlies this early at the 243rd pick. It fills a real need, too.
