The Eagles did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Malik Mustapha fell into the 170th pick. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
Reaching for Barner left real value on the table behind him. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 22 they get a difference-maker at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Patrick Paul in pick 50 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It fills a real need, too.
The board had Bralen Trice higher than the Round 2 slot, and the edge rusher fell to them anyway. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Bucky Irving in the 97th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Good price on Ty'Ron Hopper in pick No. 160, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Malik Mustapha at the 170th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They took Joe Milton III at par in slot 171, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
AJ Barner at No. 178 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on BJ Mayes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
