You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Eagles did exactly that with Sam Hartman in pick No. 172. A dependable weekend that grades out a B+.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. The McKinstry steal is the beam this whole class leans on. Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
Dallas Turner at the Round 1 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
You do not let a cornerback like Kool-Aid McKinstry reach pick No. 50 and blink. They did not. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They jumped the gun on Ty'Ron Hopper, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A minor itch, scratched.
A premium they did not need to pay, Frank Gore Jr. a notch or two before his time. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They reached a country mile for Sam Hartman at Round 5, Pick 36, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
By-the-book stuff, Jaylan Ford at slot 178 squarely in line with his ranking. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
They paid up for Chad Lindberg at No. 243 when waiting would have done the job. It fills a real need, too.
