Priorities are a choice, and the Eagles made a strange one, taking Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at linebacker in the Round 3 slot with interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots crying out for the pick instead.
Getting Gore Jr. where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 22nd overall pick they get an island corner at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Edgerrin Cooper at Round 2, Pick 18 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Cooper Beebe at the 53rd pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending slot 83 on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. with interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots unsolved.
Nice patience on Luke McCaffrey, who had no business lasting to the Round 5 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Value with a capital V on Xavier Thomas in No. 172, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Garret Greenfield is a better player than pick No. 232 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
Taking Frank Gore Jr. in slot 248 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
