The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Vikings spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
The cost of the McCarthy reach is exactly the players who went right after him. That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
They banked enough surplus on Simpson to cover a lot of smaller sins.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 11 they get a franchise quarterback, reach and all. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a premier pass rusher, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Theo Johnson in the 108th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A reach for Isaac Guerendo in the Round 4 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They took Beau Brade at par in pick No. 157, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Mason McCormick is a better player than slot 167 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jaylin Simpson at the 177th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Nothing to complain about; Julian Pearl went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Garret Greenfield at Round 7, Pick 12 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
