You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Vikings did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A D that will need time and luck to look better.
The whole projection now runs through Caleb Williams; hit there and everything else looks smarter. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. The Mitchell pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Caleb Williams at the Round 1 slot squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Somehow Quinyon Mitchell was still sitting there in the 62nd pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
McKinnley Jackson in the 98th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jaden Hicks at No. 132 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They read the board right and Ainias Smith was the payoff at pick No. 173. The roster fit checks out.
You do not let a wide receiver like Xavier Restrepo reach pick 247 and blink. They did not. A need, and now a little less of one.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Eric Gentry at Round 7, Pick 34 is the proof. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
