The Fabien Lovett selection is the head-turner. The Vikings reached 104 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A-.

Everything downstream of J.J. McCarthy depends on J.J. McCarthy, and the building knows it. The phones were where this weekend was really won. The offensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

The Ford pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.

A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.26 · Pick 26 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 42
In slot 26 they get the arm they will build around, reach and all. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · Chop Robinson · DE-EDGE · rank 34
Chop Robinson at pick No. 42 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.9 · Pick 109 · Jacob Cowing · WR · rank 100
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jacob Cowing at No. 109 is the proof. The roster fit checks out.
R4.30 · Pick 130 · Sione Vaki · S · rank 138
Sione Vaki at the Round 4 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.9 · Pick 145 · Ben Sinnott · TE · rank 145
They paid sticker price for Ben Sinnott in Round 5, Pick 9, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · Khristian Boyd · DL-EDGE · rank 161
A straight-up fair deal on Khristian Boyd at pick 157, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.30 · Pick 166 · Jaylen Wright · RB · rank 163
Jaylen Wright in No. 166 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Javon Baker · WR · rank 186
Javon Baker in pick No. 179 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
R6.29 · Pick 204 · Jaylan Ford · LB · rank 183
The board fumbled Jaylan Ford all the way to the Round 6 slot, and they scooped it up. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R7.7 · Pick 227 · Myles Jones · CB · rank 228
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Myles Jones. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R7.24 · Pick 244 · Myles Cole · DE-EDGE · rank 279
Myles Cole at the 244th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.35 · Pick 255 · Fabien Lovett · DL · rank 359
This one needs a full-page explanation: Fabien Lovett in pick 255, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
