The Fabien Lovett selection is the head-turner. The Vikings reached 104 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A-.
Everything downstream of J.J. McCarthy depends on J.J. McCarthy, and the building knows it. The phones were where this weekend was really won. The offensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The Ford pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 26 they get the arm they will build around, reach and all. The biggest hole, addressed.
Chop Robinson at pick No. 42 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jacob Cowing at No. 109 is the proof. The roster fit checks out.
Sione Vaki at the Round 4 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Ben Sinnott in Round 5, Pick 9, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A straight-up fair deal on Khristian Boyd at pick 157, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jaylen Wright in No. 166 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Javon Baker in pick No. 179 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
The board fumbled Jaylan Ford all the way to the Round 6 slot, and they scooped it up. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Myles Jones. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Myles Cole at the 244th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Fabien Lovett in pick 255, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
