There is reaching, and then there is De'Corian Clark at pick 109. The Vikings jumped the board by 91 and dared it to prove them wrong. Little went right, and the F does not pretend otherwise.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. So much rides on Jayden Daniels that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. A whole weekend of picks and safety is somehow still a want.
However the rest shakes out, Mayes at that price is a win they earned. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with safety still staring back at them.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 3 they get a long-term answer under center. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Chop Robinson at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They jumped the gun on Edgerrin Cooper, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Sedrick Van Pran in slot 69 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Zak Zinter slipping to the 106th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A wild overpay on De'Corian Clark in pick No. 109, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They talked themselves into Isaiah Davis at the Round 4 slot, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
Javion Cohen in pick 149 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No edge and no loss on Austin Booker in the 157th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Joshua Cephus. A need, and now a little less of one.
They went early on Rasheen Ali in No. 179, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Troy Omeire at pick No. 227 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Circle this one: BJ Mayes at Round 7, Pick 36 is a fall that decides a draft. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
