The board owed the Raiders one, and it paid up: Nick Nash, the No. 140 name on the board, sitting there at Round 7, Pick 22 like a gift left on the doorstep.
If McLaughlin pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Raiders indulged a want in Higgins while a need in edge rusher and tight end stayed open.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
Nice patience on Nick Emmanwori, who had no business lasting to the 37th overall pick. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tyleik Williams at the Round 2 slot. It fills a real need, too.
The board had cheaper options than Darien Porter at slot 68, and it noticed. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Taking TreVeyon Henderson in the 73rd pick is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
By-the-book stuff, Donovan Jackson at pick No. 76 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jalen Milroe slipping to Round 4, Pick 4 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They took Smael Mondon Jr. at par in No. 107, which is nothing to complain about. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A want over a need in pick 137: Jay Higgins adds a linebacker while edge rusher and tight end keeps waiting.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Seth McLaughlin well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board fumbled Cam Skattebo all the way to pick No. 196, and they scooped it up. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They will replay Nick Nash at Round 7, Pick 22 for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
