You could see the war room lean forward. DJ James at slot 120 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 22 they get an anchor for the offensive line, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Edgerrin Cooper. A minor itch, scratched.
Malachi Corley at No. 53 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
DJ James at the 120th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board fumbled Josh Newton all the way to Round 5, Pick 25, and they scooped it up. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Brennan Jackson slipping to pick No. 171 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A quiet steal in slot 172: Dylan Laube for less than the market said. The roster fit checks out.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 6 slot, where Trente Jones graded well above the range. A need, and now a little less of one.
