Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Zakhari Franklin got past him. The Eagles do not have to explain a thing at No. 246.
The Barrett pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.
Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
JC Latham at No. 25 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A slide stopped in the Round 2 slot, with Ladd McConkey worth more than the price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Nice patience on T.J. Tampa, who had no business lasting to Round 2, Pick 25. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Will Shipley at the 97th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Taking Mike Sainristil in the 155th pick is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They let Cole Bishop come to them and pounced at pick 157. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A wild overpay on Michael Barrett in pick No. 172, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Trey Knox at slot 178 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Ben Bywater in No. 195. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
