Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Raiders were there to profit. Anthony Gould, the No. 142 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick 223. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
The whole projection now runs through Michael Penix Jr.; hit there and everything else looks smarter. Reaching for Hampton left real value on the table behind him.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with cornerback the one that mattered most.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get their quarterback of the future at fair value.
A straight-up fair deal on T'Vondre Sweat at Round 2, Pick 12, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
You do not let a cornerback like DJ James reach the 77th overall pick and blink. They did not. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board had cheaper options than Isaac Guerendo at pick 112, and it noticed. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Roger Rosengarten slipping to slot 148 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Dominique Hampton in pick No. 208, miles early. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Anthony Gould in the Round 7 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A slide stopped in the 229th pick, with Garret Greenfield worth more than the price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
