Houston Texans

The steal of the weekend belongs to the Texans and Pearsall: D-.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Texans did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.

They are betting Colson proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Pearsall at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Jayron Kearse gives the group a proven body among the projects.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.26 · Pick 26 · Emeka Egbuka · WR · rank 25
In No. 26 they get a true top target. The biggest hole, addressed.
R1.28 · Pick 28 · T'Vondre Sweat · DL · rank 32
In the 28th pick they get a disruptive interior force at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.1 · Pick 33 · Ja'Tavion Sanders · TE · rank 27
A clean, defensible pick in the 33rd overall pick with a little surplus value in Ja'Tavion Sanders. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R2.11 · Pick 43 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 56
The board had cheaper options than Cooper Beebe at pick No. 43, and it noticed. A need, and now a little less of one.
R2.21 · Pick 53 · Patrick Paul · OT · rank 51
A straight-up fair deal on Patrick Paul at pick 53, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.26 · Pick 89 · TreVeyon Henderson · RB · rank 85
TreVeyon Henderson at Round 3, Pick 26 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.27 · Pick 90 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 94
Zak Zinter at pick No. 90 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Adisa Isaac · DE-EDGE · rank 98
Adisa Isaac in pick 91 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.32 · Pick 95 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 122
Junior Colson at the Round 3 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.21 · Pick 121 · James Williams · S · rank 131
James Williams in the 121st pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R4.24 · Pick 124 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 130
By-the-book stuff, Khyree Jackson at slot 124 squarely in line with his ranking. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R5.22 · Pick 158 · Jonah Monheim · OT · rank 155
Good price on Jonah Monheim in the 158th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R7.20 · Pick 240 · Ricky Pearsall · WR · rank 205
They will replay Ricky Pearsall at Round 7, Pick 20 for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R7.22 · Pick 242 · Sam Hartman · QB · rank 266
Sam Hartman at No. 242 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
