You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Texans did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
The Williams pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with tight end and linebacker still on the board. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Haynes has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 30th pick they get a difference-maker at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Chris Braswell in slot 36, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
By-the-book stuff, T'Vondre Sweat at the 58th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reach for Christian Haynes in Round 3, Pick 2; a little patience would have been rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 3 slot with a little surplus value in Javon Bullard. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A conviction pick on Zak Zinter at pick No. 90 that the board grades a round light. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board had cheaper options than Javon Foster at No. 123, and it noticed. A need, and now a little less of one.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, James Williams adds a safety and leaves tight end and linebacker untouched.
A tidy little value on Jaylen Wright in the Round 5 slot, a step better than break-even. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Joe Milton III in No. 176 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
