There is conviction, and then there is this. The Eagles took Jasheen Davis a full 122 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Call it a C+ and check back in two years.
That Paul Jr. pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it.
So much rides on Tyler Warren that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 31 they get a security blanket over the middle, reach and all. A real need, handled.
You do not let a running back like Kalel Mullings reach the 139th overall pick and blink. They did not. The roster fit checks out.
Phil Mafah at No. 145 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Brant Kuithe this early at the 152nd pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jay Higgins in Round 5, Pick 23 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They will replay Chris Paul Jr. at pick No. 162 for years; that is how good the value is. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
They robbed the room for Jeffrey Bassa here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Tonka Hemingway in the 166th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Barryn Sorrell. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They reached into another round for Phillip Webb, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jasheen Davis in the 175th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Seth McLaughlin at No. 202 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Xavier Truss at pick No. 204 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A real head-scratcher, Thor Griffith in Round 6, Pick 36 is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Tim Smith at the 227th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They talked themselves into Peny Boone at the Round 7 slot, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
