Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Eagles were there to profit. Trey Benson, the No. 87 name on the board, should have been long gone before No. 120.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
It is not that Gray is a bad player; it is that the Eagles had louder needs to answer first. Every board in the league had Gray lower, and that gap is the story.
So much rides on Quinyon Mitchell that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 22nd pick they get a double-digit-sack hope at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In the 27th overall pick they get a press-man option on the boundary, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Edgerrin Cooper went about where he belonged in pick No. 50. A minor itch, scratched.
They paid sticker price for Gabriel Murphy in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A curious use of Round 4, Pick 4. Interior defensive lineman, offensive lineman and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Cedric Gray did not.
Steal is underselling it; Trey Benson at pick 120 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Kamal Hadden at No. 161 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A tidy little value on Jaheim Bell in slot 171, a step better than break-even. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Cornelius Johnson in the 210th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
