The Raiders torched the value chart for Jordan Strachan, taking him 126 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They have staked the next five years on Jayden Daniels, which is the only story that really matters here.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
There is no soft landing here; this class has to massively overperform just to matter.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 7th pick they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
In pick No. 10 they get an island corner, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In No. 22 they get the heartbeat of the defense, though the board says they badly overpaid. Need was not the driver here.
James Williams in Round 4, Pick 13 is fair value, right on his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A real head-scratcher, Rasheen Ali in slot 147 is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
LaDarius Henderson in the Round 6 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jordan Strachan this early at pick 221. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
They reached a country mile for Joshua Cephus at the 225th overall pick, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Ro Torrence. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
