The tape said wait; the Raiders did not. Jordan Strachan went at pick No. 209, a good 138 picks before the board was ready. There is no dressing it up: a F.
They have staked the next five years on Jayden Daniels, which is the only story that really matters here. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left edge rusher open, and the grade is the bill.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 7 they get the face of the franchise at fair value.
In Round 1, Pick 22 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker, a steep price for the projection. Need was not the driver here.
Johnny Wilson in the Round 3 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
No edge and no loss on James Williams in the 113th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They reached a country mile for LaDarius Henderson at No. 125, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jordan Strachan. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
They jumped the gun on Rasheen Ali, taking him earlier than his grade liked. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Joshua Cephus in pick No. 225, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A reach for Ro Torrence in pick 253; a little patience would have been rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
