The Raiders clearly saw something nobody else did in Jaylon Hutchings, taking him 127 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
Johnson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
Job largely done: cornerback settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 13 they get a ballhawk on the outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They paid a round early for Braden Fiske in the Round 2 slot, more than the board wanted. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Dominick Puni in slot 77 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Isaac Guerendo in Round 4, Pick 12 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They did well to land Nehemiah Pritchett in the 148th pick, just ahead of his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Garret Greenfield at pick 208 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Nathaniel Watson slipping to pick 223 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They reached into another round for Jaylon Hutchings, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Cornelius Johnson in the 229th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
