The Raiders spent the pick that matters most on Cam Ward, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
Getting Johnson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Cam Ward at Round 1, Pick 6 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Omarion Hampton in No. 37 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No drama and no debate, Omarr Norman-Lott went about where he belonged in pick No. 68. It fills a real need, too.
Barrett Carter in pick 108 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Tez Johnson at the 143rd pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
JJ Pegues at the Round 6 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
You do not let a tight end like Oronde Gadsden II reach slot 213 and blink. They did not. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A cornerback of that caliber at the 215th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jamon Dumas-Johnson at slot 222 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
