The phones were a trap the Cardinals kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. A D that will need time and luck to look better.
A whole weekend of picks and offensive lineman is somehow still a want. McCarthy has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 2nd overall pick they get a true top target at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get a difference-maker at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
In Round 1, Pick 21 they get a premier pass rusher. Exactly the need they had to hit.
J.J. McCarthy at pick No. 34 is a conviction pick that outran the value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Somehow Jeremiah Trotter Jr. was still sitting there in No. 66, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Taking Kalen King in pick 70 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
No edge and no loss on Devontez Walker in No. 102; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Tykee Smith slipping to the 139th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Cody Schrader in pick 198 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
