You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Eagles did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
The cost of the Rosemy-Jacksaint reach is exactly the players who went right after him. It is not that Gray is a bad player; it is that the Eagles had louder needs to answer first. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Allen.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
Byron Murphy II at pick No. 17 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Cooper DeJean at slot 28 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Keon Coleman in the Round 2 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Payton Wilson in the 53rd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A tidy little value on Christian Haynes in Round 3, Pick 5, a step better than break-even. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Christian Jones in No. 114, miles early. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A curious use of slot 120. Edge rusher and quarterback needed the pick; a linebacker in Cedric Gray did not.
Circle this one: Braelon Allen at the 129th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board had Johnny Wilson higher than the Round 4 slot, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They took Tykee Smith at par in pick 160, which is nothing to complain about. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Tip Reiman at pick No. 161 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for Malik Mustapha in No. 171, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jaylan Ford at Round 6, Pick 14 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Fair-plus on Jared Wiley, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
