After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Vikings committed. Bo Nix is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. With safety, offensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them.
For all the activity, safety went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Harrell pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the safety spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term answer under center. The biggest hole, addressed.
No drama and no debate, T.J. Tampa went about where he belonged in pick 42. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They bypassed pressing needs at safety, offensive lineman and other spots to take Max Melton, a cornerback that was not the priority.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Kris Abrams-Draine in the 130th overall pick leaves safety, offensive lineman and other spots for later.
By-the-book stuff, Ty'Ron Hopper at slot 148 squarely in line with his ranking. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Nothing to complain about; Justin Rogers went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jaylen Harrell at pick No. 173 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Value said wait; Braiden McGregor in Round 6, Pick 4 says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Eric Gentry at the 230th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Tatum Bethune in No. 238 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Derek Wingo in Round 7, Pick 34 is fair value, right on his grade. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
