There is conviction, and then there is this. The Texans took Jordan Travis a full 41 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Texans had louder needs to answer first.
A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. The Clark pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 26 they get a weapon on the perimeter, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
In pick 29 they get juice off the edge at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
You do not let an offensive lineman like JC Latham reach the Round 2 slot and blink. They did not. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Value said wait; Cooper Beebe in No. 37 says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
A curious use of Round 2, Pick 27. Interior defensive lineman needed the pick; a DT-EDGE in Maason Smith did not.
A straight-up fair deal on TreVeyon Henderson at the 84th pick, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A big swing on Junior Colson at the 92nd pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jordan Travis in slot 97 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Cade Stover this early at pick 117. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
James Williams at Round 4, Pick 26 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A slide stopped in No. 154, with Nehemiah Pritchett worth more than the price. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jonah Monheim at the Round 5 slot is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They barely believed it either: De'Corian Clark still on the board at the 234th overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They reached a country mile for Justin Eboigbe at pick No. 238, and the board is aghast. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
