Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Barrett Carter got past him. The Raiders do not have to explain a thing at slot 178. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
The Higgins reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. Shedeur Sanders is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off.
They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 1 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
Kaleb Johnson at pick No. 34 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They reached a country mile for Charles Grant at No. 65, and the board is aghast. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jayden Higgins well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
JT Tuimoloau in pick No. 103 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Miles Frazier in the Round 4 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Taking Barrett Carter in pick 178 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They will replay Chris Paul Jr. at the 212th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Rod Moore in the 216th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They paid sticker price for Jonah Monheim in Round 7, Pick 3, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
