They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Cam Skattebo, 72 picks early at the 106th pick. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
They banked enough surplus on Taaffe to cover a lot of smaller sins. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 8 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Quinn Ewers at No. 39 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board fumbled Jihaad Campbell all the way to pick 69, and they scooped it up. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A slide stopped in the 70th pick, with Dylan Fairchild worth more than the price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A wild overpay on Cam Skattebo in Round 4, Pick 5, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Lathan Ransom at the 146th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Taking Cody Simon in slot 183 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Value with a capital V on DJ Campbell in pick 212, a genuine coup. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Michael Taaffe in Round 6, Pick 41 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
They paid sticker price for Logan Parr in the Round 7 slot, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
