Good, not great, for the Vikings: B-.

The Vikings clearly saw something nobody else did in T.J. Sanders, taking him 40 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.

The Gray pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. It is not that Sainristil is a bad player; it is that the Vikings had louder needs to answer first.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Quarterback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.16 · Pick 16 · Kool-Aid McKinstry · CB · rank 14
No edge and no loss on Kool-Aid McKinstry in the Round 1 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 43
They took J.J. McCarthy at par in the 42nd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.17 · Pick 81 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 77
Payton Wilson at pick No. 81 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Bucky Irving · RB · rank 94
Bucky Irving is a better player than pick 108 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.28 · Pick 128 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 136
A want over a need in slot 128: Mike Sainristil adds a cornerback while edge rusher and tight end keeps waiting.
R5.12 · Pick 148 · Jacob Cowing · WR · rank 178
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jacob Cowing in Round 5, Pick 12, miles early. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.27 · Pick 163 · Josh Proctor · S · rank 177
They paid up for Josh Proctor at Round 5, Pick 27 when waiting would have done the job. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.28 · Pick 164 · T.J. Sanders · DT · rank 204
A swing that ignored the value entirely, T.J. Sanders well ahead of where he belonged. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Jalen Berger · RB · rank 198
They reached a country mile for Jalen Berger at No. 179, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
R7.10 · Pick 230 · Joshua Gray · OT · rank 199
Joshua Gray at pick 230 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
