Whoever sat across the table from the Texans should ask for a receipt. They cleaned the room out, prying loose far more value than they gave up, and it was the quiet MVP of their weekend.
They will answer for taking safety early while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots went begging. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Nubin. If Sweat pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
Value said wait; T'Vondre Sweat in pick No. 42 says they were not listening. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Tyler Nubin slid further than he should have, and the 45th overall pick is lovely value for the safety. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A straight-up fair deal on Roman Wilson at the 76th pick, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid a round early for Sedrick Van Pran in slot 78, more than the board wanted. It fills a real need, too.
Javon Foster at the Round 4 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent pick 127 on James Williams, a safety they were not short of.
Jaylin Simpson at No. 132 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A quiet steal in Round 5, Pick 28: Jaylen Wright for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They took Chad Lindberg at par in the 253rd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
