You can hear the double-takes from here. The Eagles took Brevyn Spann-Ford at pick 188, roughly 61 spots before his name belonged. Hard to defend, and the D- reflects that.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The Eagles indulged a want in Wilson while a need in interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots stayed open. Suamataia falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 23rd overall pick they get a press-man option on the boundary. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They paid sticker price for Darius Robinson in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They took Xavier Legette at par in Round 2, Pick 7, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Edgerrin Cooper at pick No. 50 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor itch, scratched.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Payton Wilson in the 59th pick leaves interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots for later.
Kingsley Suamataia at No. 74 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jaden Hicks in the 90th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A tidy bit of business in Round 4, Pick 4, where Caelen Carson graded well above the range. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Khyree Jackson in slot 108 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Johnny Wilson at the 120th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Justin Eboigbe at No. 123 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick No. 125 on Cedric Gray with interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
A slide stopped in the Round 4 slot, with James Williams worth more than the price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Eric Watts this early at pick 171. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Malik Mustapha in No. 172 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Brevyn Spann-Ford at the 188th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
