The trade table was where it all came apart. The Vikings shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
Every board in the league had Muhammad III lower, and that gap is the story. A whole weekend of picks and safety is somehow still a want. Smith-Wade falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Quarterback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 23 they get a disruptor off the edge, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
They paid sticker price for Troy Fautanu in the 44th pick, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They did well to land J.J. McCarthy in slot 55, just ahead of his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board had cheaper options than Blake Corum at the Round 3 slot, and it noticed. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Tommy Eichenberg at No. 112 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Cam Hart at pick No. 127 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Nehemiah Pritchett in the 149th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
They reached a country mile for Moose Muhammad III at Round 5, Pick 19, and the board is aghast. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Seth McLaughlin at pick No. 162 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A straight-up fair deal on Nelson Ceaser at the 165th pick, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Justin Rogers at No. 179 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Keith Randolph Jr. in Round 6, Pick 11. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Chau Smith-Wade slid further than he should have, and pick 233 is lovely value for the cornerback. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
