For all the names on the card, the loudest question went unanswered. The Texans walked out of the weekend still thin at edge rusher, a hole that has a way of deciding seasons. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
On value alone, Chambers makes the weekend a net positive. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with running back the one that mattered most. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 23 they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value. More want than need.
Nothing to complain about; Ja'Tavion Sanders went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
They did well to land Braden Fiske in pick No. 90, just ahead of his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Ainias Smith is a better player than Round 4, Pick 23 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board had Dillon Johnson higher than pick 126, and the running back fell to them anyway. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
LaDarius Henderson in No. 163 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Steele Chambers slid further than he should have, and the Round 7 slot is lovely value for the linebacker. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Ja'Had Carter at the 247th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
