You could see the war room lean forward. Dillon Johnson at pick No. 190 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.

Spending an early pick on linebacker with wide receiver and tight end open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. A whole weekend of picks and wide receiver is somehow still a want.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.15 · Pick 15 · Dallas Turner · LB-EDGE · rank 14
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Dallas Turner. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 46
J.J. McCarthy at the 42nd pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R2.14 · Pick 46 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 50
No drama and no debate, Junior Colson went about where he belonged in slot 46. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R4.9 · Pick 109 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 104
Zak Zinter in the Round 4 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.30 · Pick 130 · Cedric Gray · LB · rank 126
A surprising call. With wide receiver and tight end still to address, they spent the 130th overall pick on Cedric Gray, a linebacker they were not short of.
R5.20 · Pick 156 · Jarrian Jones · CB · rank 149
Good price on Jarrian Jones in pick 156, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A minor itch, scratched.
R5.30 · Pick 166 · Braiden McGregor · DE-EDGE · rank 173
By-the-book stuff, Braiden McGregor at pick No. 166 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Jordan Jefferson · DT · rank 186
No edge and no loss on Jordan Jefferson in No. 179; it is a wash and a sensible one. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R6.15 · Pick 190 · Dillon Johnson · RB · rank 170
You do not let a running back like Dillon Johnson reach pick No. 190 and blink. They did not. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.12 · Pick 232 · Tyler Owens · S · rank 228
Fair-plus on Tyler Owens, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
