When a board-topper like Josh Newton slides to Round 5, Pick 35, you do not overthink it, and the Eagles did not. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. They went 5 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
So much rides on Cooper DeJean that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 22 they get a press-man option on the boundary. The biggest hole, addressed.
In pick No. 23 they get juice off the edge at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at No. 52 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They let Dadrion Taylor-Demerson come to them and pounced at pick 97. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A clean, defensible pick in the 100th overall pick with a little surplus value in Brenden Rice. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Cedric Gray in Round 5, Pick 24 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Jarrian Jones at the 170th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board fumbled Josh Newton all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Isaiah Davis is a better player than Round 6, Pick 3 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jase McClellan at slot 189 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Tyler Owens slid further than he should have, and the 240th pick is lovely value for the safety. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
